LightForce braces vs conventional braces

Conventional braces are produced with the same prescription and shape for every patient. The office inventories a range of sizes, bonds them by eye, and then works through whatever shows up as teeth move. That approach has treated millions of smiles. It is also inherently one-size-fits-all.

LightForce is different. Each bracket is designed and 3D-printed for the individual tooth, so the appliance is truly one size fits one — uniquely tailored for each tooth on each patient. Custom LightForce appliances are available in metal or a translucent material, with colorful or clear ties on either version.

A few things make treatment more efficient in many cases:

1. Manufacturing tolerances are tighter than traditional metal injection molding, so the planned movement is expressed more completely.
2. The bracket base matches the shape of that tooth, which helps the fit and the bond.
3. A digital mock-up is done before we start, so alignment and fit issues can be built into the plan instead of discovered appointment by appointment.
4. Placement uses 3D-printed templates, which reduces guesswork at the chair.

Typical comprehensive treatment still often lands in the 18–22 month range. With custom appliances we are seeing that number come down in some cases — sometimes by as much as 40% — with some finishes in 8–10 months. Younger adolescent patients often move a little faster than adults. Impacted teeth, extractions, severe crowding, bite problems, and palatal expansion still add time when they are part of the plan.
